Gov. Paul LePage (R) “sent a letter to Republican lawmakers Friday apologizing for ‘any difficulty that remarks recently reported in the press’ had caused them.” LePage was referring to reports that he recently told GOP donors at a private fundraiser that President Obama “hates white people.”

In the letter, LePage wrote: “”Let me be clear, I do not believe that President Obama dislikes any racial group. … I believe that President Obama had perhaps the most unique opportunity in history to bring the country together. He could have been a great unifier for this nation. It is unfortunate that the President has missed that opportunity. It is also unfortunate that the media seized on this opportunity to try to divide us even more and create a problem where there is none.”

LePage blamed “newspapers owned by politically motivated and powerful elitists” for taking his words out of context and using them against him. The letter “marked the first time the governor has confirmed discussing Obama during the fundraiser,” but it does “not address his exact statement during the fundraiser.” (Bangor Daily News)

QUITE A SUMMER: “Since June, [LePage] has sparked outrage over a crude sexual comment he made about an opponent; remarked — jokingly, he said later — that he wanted to blow up a newspaper, and, according to a Maine media report this week that he denied, told a roomful of Republicans recently that President Barack Obama ‘hates white people.’” (Politico)
