A special election loss at the outset of primary season would deliver a costly blow to House Republicans in what already looks like a challenging midterm cycle. Enter House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, whom Republicans have cast yet again in a starring role to help save their show.
The California Democrat appears in each of the five TV ads that have been released in Pennsylvania’s 18th District by the NRCC and the GOP-aligned super PAC Congressional Leadership Fund. Three of the five tie her to the Democratic nominee, former federal prosecutor Conor Lamb, by utilizing his last name.
The groups are also spending significant amounts of airtime introducing Republican state Rep. Rick Saccone, who needs the backup after getting vastly outraised by Lamb. But featuring Pelosi is the GOP’s trump card and the same tactic successfully deployed last year in the big-spending special for Georgia’s 6th District.
While Pelosi’s “crumbs” comment about the bonuses tied to the GOP tax code overhaul may be taken out of context, it doesn’t help keep her from getting type-casted.
