Former Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R) “will not run for the U.S. Senate in November,” depriving Republicans of a top recruit to challenge Sen. Tina Smith (D).

“I am very interested in public service and service for the common good,” Pawlenty said on Fox Business Network Tuesday. “There are a lot of different ways to do that, but I’ll tell you today that running for the United States Senate in 2018 won’t be part of those plans.”

Pawlenty had been viewed as the GOP’s best contender to take on Smith and had been courted by both donors and top Republicans.
