State Land Commissioner Aubrey Dunn (R) “is dropping out of the race to replace” Rep. Steve Pearce (R) “in Congress, and at this point he isn’t talking about his future plans. … Since August, Dunn has been in a public spat with the leader of his party in New Mexico,” Gov. Susana Martinez (R), “but whether that was a factor in his decision isn’t clear.” (Las Cruces Sun-News)

Dunn’s exit leaves three Republicans left vying for their party’s nomination: state GOP Chair Monty Newman, state Rep. Yvette Herrell, and former Eddy County Commissioner Jack Volpato.

Pearce is running for governor in 2018. His district leans Republican and spans most of Southern and Central New Mexico.
