Former RNC Chair Ed Gillespie (R) is running a new negative TV ad against Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam (D), accusing him of missing economic development meetings and letting a fake Chinese company take $1.4 million from taxpayers.
Gillespie is also running an ad blaming Northam for casting the “deciding vote in favor of sanctuary cities.”
A spokesman declined to disclose “the details of our ad buys.” (Hotline reporting)
EVERYONE WANTS IN ON THE ACTION. “Planned Parenthood Votes and the Planned Parenthood Virginia PAC, the Tom Steyer-backed Next Gen America, Priorities USA, Progress Virginia and the Virginia League of Conservation Voters PAC are all contributing hundreds of thousands of dollars to the [$2 million digital ad] effort, which will begin this week and run until Election Day. The ads will aim to reach and turn out more than 1.2 million voters.”

The state PAC for the National Democratic Redistricting Committee reported a $500,000 contribution from the National Democratic Redistricting Foundation. “So far, at least $16.5 million has been directed by only seven organizations to the candidates or is being spent on behalf of Gillespie or Northam, who has single-digit leads in the early polls.”

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING. Gillespie released a transportation platform on Thursday that promises “hands-on management to fix Metro, deepen and widen our Port, and advance projects quickly and efficiently.” To sell the plan, his campaign created a video that includes cameos by former Gov. Bob McDonnell (R), state Sen. Mark Obenshain (R), and former RNC Chair Michael Steele. (release)
“As insurer after insurer has dropped out of the individual market, more than 66,000 residents in 58 Virginia cities and counties could be left with no coverage and no options next year. The Commonwealth Institute analyzed tax proposals by Northam, Gillespie, and Cliff Hyra (L). “All of these proposals would reduce local or state revenue collections. Given Virginia’s tight budget situation, when discussing the tax cuts it’s important to also discuss what public services would be eliminated or reduced or what sources of revenue will be raised to pay for them.” (release)
