Detroit News editor Nolan Finley called for Rep. John Conyers (D) to retire, saying Conyers often has mental lapses, including in meetings with the News. Finley writes that Conyers has had trouble remembering information about bills he planned to introduce, and that he once left a meeting with the News without explanation, leaving a confused aide.

“Conyers is no longer fit to serve, and those close to him must know it,” Finley writes. “I don’t know whether he has dementia, Alzheimer’s, senility or some other form of diminished mental capacity. It’s just clear that he’s not quite right.”

Conyers’s name may not be on the primary ballot because of petition signatures being rejected after signature gatherers were found to have not been registered voters. (Detroit News)
