Republicans Prepare for Super Tuesday

Candidates get equal time on NBC thanks to Trump and SNL.

Nov. 24, 2015, 8:02 a.m.

“While the February states — Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada — are expected to set the tone and winnow the field, Super Tuesday will arrive like a thunderclap, probably determining which candidates will survive for what could be a protracted battle for the nomination.”

“For centrist Republicans such as” Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R), “the aim may not be so much sweeping Super Tuesday as surviving it. After March 1, the calendar turns more to their liking, with a number of winner-take-all states in less-conservative regions where suburban, business-friendly Republicans may matter more than evangelicals and tea party activists.”

For real estate mogul Donald Trump (R) and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson (R), “the political outsiders who have dominated the race for months, Super Tuesday has long been seen by party operatives as the turning point when one of them could surge.”

“Securing the nomination is a matter of accumulating delegates, and exponentially more are up for grabs on March 1 — 595 total — than in the four early-voting states, which together have 133 delegates, according to figures provided by the Republican National Committee.” (Washington Post)

EQUAL TIME. Kasich, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R), former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore (R), and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) “will each be given 12-minutes-worth of advertising time on 18 NBC affiliate stations in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. The ads will air during primetime hours on November 27 and 28, as well as during ‘Saturday Night Live’ on November 2.”

Former New York Gov. George Pataki (R) turned down NBC’s equal time offer and a spokesman said that they are still in discussion with NBC. (CNN)

THE DETAILS

"President Donald Trump directed his longtime attorney Michael Cohen to lie to Congress about negotiations to build a Trump Tower in Moscow, according to two federal law enforcement officials involved in an investigation of the matter. Trump also supported a plan, set up by Cohen, to visit Russia during the presidential campaign, in order to personally meet President Vladimir Putin and jump-start the tower negotiations. 'Make it happen,' the sources said Trump told Cohen."
