NRCC Backs Out of NV-04

The Congressional Leadership Fund reported about $3 million in ad buys across 10 districts.

The NRCC slashed $1.2 million “in late advertising in the expensive Las Vegas media market, a sign the party no longer has confidence” that former Rep. Cresent Hardy (R) can beat former Rep. Steven Horsford (D) in the open-seat NV-04 race. “The NRCC had spent about $3 million” boosting Hardy. “The only public poll in the race, conducted last week by Emerson College, showed Horsford up 36-34 percent. “Privately, Republicans have said the race is not as close. One senior Republican official said the NRCC decided to move its money simply because it is needed in too many other places.” (The Hill)

A new web video from the NRCC features St. Louis County Commissioner Pete Stauber (R), who is running MN-08, discussing the 1995 incident in which he was shot while he was sitting in his car and expressing his support for the Second Amendment.

The DCCC is airing a Spanish-language ad in FL-27 connecting television journalist Maria Elvira Salazar (R) to President Trump. (YouTube) The Democratic group also launched an ad against Rep. Leonard Lance (R) in NJ-07 over health care. (Twitter)

CLF reported a $495,000 buy in MN-01, $317,000 in WI-01, $379,000 in VA-07, $268,000 in NY-22, $110,000 in NE-02, $180,000 in MN-03, $114,000 in KS-03, $471,000 in IL-12, $418,000 in CA-39, $285,000 in CA-48. America First Action, which supports Trump, reported buys totaling $827,000 in ME-02, $1.4 million in NV-03, $614,000 in PA-10, and $618,000 in WV-03. (FEC)

The League of Conservation Voters announced a $567,000 digital ad campaign in three districts: IL-14, MN-02 and TX-32, where the group will run two spots. (release)

Defending Main Street is running an ad blasting millionaire philanthropist Scott Wallace (D) in PA-01 for his ties to “convicted cop killer Mumia Abu-Jamal.” The six-figure buy will run through Oct. 31. (release)

Citizens for Responsible Energy Solutions, which backs Republicans, is “dropping $221,000 on a radio, digital, mail and phone ad buy supporting” Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-FL 26). “CRES is linking to a new 30-second spot on its website...highlighting Curbelo’s environmental record.” (Florida Politics)

AZ-02: Former Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick (D) claims in a TV ad that Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce President Lea Marquez Peterson (R) wants to privatize Social Security to benefit her “Wall Street supporters” at the expense of seniors. The spot is airing on broadcast and cable in Tucson. (release)

MI-08: In her latest TV ad, former Defense Department official Elissa Slotkin (D) highlights her record in the CIA under presidents from both parties and her pledge not to accept money from special interests, contrasting that with Rep. Mike Bishop (R) who has taken money from the pharmaceutical industry. (YouTube)

NC-13: Former immigration attorney Kathy Manning (D) released an ad saying she will support lower taxes for working people and small businesses, but not “tax giveaways for big corporations and billionaires.” (Twitter)

NJ-03: Former State Department official Andy Kim (D) highlights his experience in the White House Situation Room in a TV ad, noting that he will work with both parties to “put the lives of New Jersey families before politics.” (release)

NY-01: Rep. Lee Zeldin’s (R) latest ad paints businessman Perry Gershon (D) as a liar, featuring a district resident who claims Gershon lied to him and angrily engaged him over the Democrat’s investments in offshore drilling. (Twitter)

OH-07: Former Navy pilot Ken Harbaugh (D) released a TV ad discussing his time in the military working with others regardless of political party. He also notes Rep. Bob Gibbs (R) took contributions from health care insurance companies.(YouTube)

PA-07: A new ad from former Allentown solicitor Susan Wild (D) features a cancer survivor criticizing former Olympic cyclist Marty Nothstein (R) for wanting to end pre-existing condition protections. (YouTube)

An ad from Nothstein accuses Wild of being a “career politician” who supports congressional pensions and collects “a lavish, tax-payer funded pension” from her job as Allentown solicitor “on top of a six-figure salary”. However, “Her mandatory financial disclosure form says that she has a Pennsylvania Municipal Retirement asset worth between $1,001-15,000. Her campaign said, more specifically, the asset is worth $6,000. She has not earned a six-figure salary from the public sector,” but she has earned six figures working in the private sector. Staff Director for House Intel Committee Passes Away

Damon Nelson, the staff director for the House Intelligence Committee, died unexpectedly after a brief illness, according to a statement from Chairman Devin Nunes. Nelson and Nunes first met in high school, and Nelson worked for the congressmen since his freshmen term 15 years ago. He started "as his legislative director in 2003 before becoming his deputy chief of staff. When Nunes became chairman of the Intelligence Committee in 2015, Nelson went to work for him there, becoming staff director a year later."
