CA GOV: Families & Teachers for Antonio Villaraigosa for Governor 2018, a super PAC backing former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (D), “released its first television ad Thursday, praising his record for working with Republicans and as a candidate for ‘all of California.’ The ad, which is to air statewide on broadcast and cable stations. … The independent expenditure committee … is sponsored by the California Charter Schools Assn. Advocates. … The committee is spending ‘seven figures’ per week on the ad buy, said Josh Pulliam, a political consultant for the committee.” (Los Angeles Times)

Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) and businessman John Cox (R) took 26 and 16 percent, respectively, in a new J. Wallin Opinion Research and Tulchin Research poll (March 30-April 4; 800 LVs; +/-3.7%) sponsored by Choose Children 2018 and the Silicon Valley Community Foundation. State Treasurer John Chiang (D), state Assemblyman Travis Allen (R), Villaraigosa, and former State Superintendent of Public Instruction Delaine Eastin (D) trailed in the single digits. (Politico)

“The California Medical Assn., the state doctors lobby and a political heavyweight,” endorsed Newsom on Thursday. (Los Angeles Times) Nesom “tamped down expectations about how long it will take to transition from an employer-based coverage system, which is how most Californians get their health care. ‘Years,’ Newsom said. ‘First of all, you will deal with litigation. You’ll deal with setbacks. You’ll have constitutional questions that have to be addressed by the voters. You’ll have propositions on the ballot — maybe multiple. … It is not an act that would occur by the signature of the next governor. … There’s a lot of mythology about that.” (San Francisco Chronicle)

“Newsom and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, reported nearly $1.3 million in adjusted gross income in 2016, according to tax returns his campaign provided Thursday.” (San Francisco Chronicle)

“Newsom … missed scores of meetings held by the University of California Board of Regents, the California State University Board of Trustees and the California State Lands Commission.” (Los Angeles Times)

The Orange County Republican Central Committee endorsed Allen. (Los Angeles Times)

“Cagle is leveraging his public office in the final weeks before the GOP primary by sending letters to local superintendents touting his record on education.” (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)

NY GOV: Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s (D) “aides and campaign staff made a round of phone calls to elected officials, asking them to not attend a rally on Thursday in support of community groups that have endorsed” actress Cynthia Nixon (D). “The rally was held to protest what organizers described as Mr. Cuomo’s pressure tactics: They said the governor made a push for labor unions to stop funding those same community groups. … Cuomo has denied using any such pressure tactics.” (New York Times)

SC GOV: The Conservation Voters of South Carolina endorsed state Rep. James Smith (D). (Columbia State)
