FL-27: Former University of Miami President Donna Shalala (D) filed paperwork Monday to enter the crowded primary for retiring Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen’s (R) seat. “Fernand Amandi, a pollster and” Shalala adviser, “said she planned to speak later in the week” and formally announce. Shalala, who served in President Bill Clinton’s administration, brings a big name to a race full of well-funded Democrats. Several have already raised over six-figures.
“At least two candidates already in the race,” former Circuit Court judge Mary Barzee Flores (D) and Miami Beach Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez (D), “have attacked Shalala’s record in recent weeks even before her bid was made official. Four other candidates,” state Sen. José Javier Rodríguez (D), state Rep. David Richardson (D), former Knight Foundation director Matt Haggman (D), and Miami Commissioner Ken Russell (D) “have each raised over six figures so far, meaning Shalala could have trouble courting donors who have already committed other candidates.” (Miami Herald)
