Air Force veteran Troy Downing (R) “spent $710,000 through Dec. 31, primarily on advertising and consultants,” according to FEC filings. That amount is higher than the total shelled out by any of his GOP opponents. He raised $860,000.

Downing spokesman "Kevin Gardner said the early heavy spending was part of an aggressive campaign for the nomination to challenge” Sen. Jon Tester (D). Downing poured $650,000 of his money into his own race.

Meanwhile, state Auditor Matt Rosendale (R) raised $765,000, while former Yellowstone County District Judge Russell Fagg (R) took in $615,000. “Each had almost $500,000 in cash remaining as the year began, compared to less than $150,000 remaining for Downing.” State Sen. Al Olszewski (R) “raised $210,000, including $100,000 of his own money.” (AP)
