Sen. Joe Manchin (D) attempted to make amends with President Trump after he criticized Manchin in a interview with the New York Times last week. In the wake of Manchin voting no on the GOP tax bill, Trump spoke to the Times and called Manchin “a nice guy” but also said, “he talks. But he doesn’t do anything. He doesn’t do. ‘Hey, let’s get together, let’s do bipartisan.’”

Relaying the contents of his phone call to the president, Manchin said, “I want to work every bill in a bipartisan way—and when you’re serious about a bipartisan bill that you want to work on too, then I’m going to come directly to you.” Manchin is up for reelection and is seen as vulnerable as a Democrat in a deeply red state that Trump won by 42 points in the 2016 election.
