“Perennially mentioned in connection with the 8th District,” former Evansville Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel (D) “has declined to run in each two-year cycle since he narrowly missed defeating” then-Rep. John Hostettler (R) “in 1996. The former mayor did not return messages seeking comment, but Democrats who know him say he is well aware opinion polls show the potential for a strong Democratic showing in next year’s congressional elections.”

“Most activist Democrats believe Weinzapfel, also a former state legislator, has the connections and substantial political base needed to mount a credible campaign. He now serves as chancellor of Ivy Tech Community College’s Evansville campus, having led the Terre Haute campus before a reorganization in June. But time is running short for Weinzapfel to get organized for an election that is just 10 months away.” (Evansville Courier & Press)

The district leans Republican and backed President Trump by 34 points.
