More Than 20 Incumbents Outraised by Challengers

A dozen candidates in open-seat and competitive races raised $500,000 or more.

Third-quarter fundraising reports were due on Sunday night. Below are the hauls from candidates in open seats and from incumbents and challengers who raised at least $100,000 and are running in districts rated as competitive by the Cook Political Report. All reports cover from July 1 to Sept. 30 unless otherwise specified.

Some highlights: Reps. Martha McSally (R-AZ 02), Jeff Denham (R-CA 10), Ed Royce (R-CA 39), Tom MacArthur (R-NJ 03) and Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ 05) all raised more than $600,000 in the third quarter.

Incumbents outraised by one or more challengers: Reps. Steve Knight (R-CA 25), Ed Royce (R-CA 39), Darrell Issa (R-CA 49), John Faso (R-NY 19), Mike Bost (R-IL 12), Mike Bishop (R-MI 08), Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-NJ 11), Claudia Tenney (R-NY 22), Pat Meehan (R-PA 07), John Culberson (R-TX 07), Rick Nolan (D-MN 08), Duncan Hunter (R-CA 50), Rob Woodall (R-GA 07), Andy Barr (R-KY 06), Greg Gianforte (R-MT AL), George Holding (R-NC 02), Robert Pittenger (R-NC 09), Dan Donovan (R-NY 11), Lloyd Smucker (R-PA 16), Tom Garrett (R-VA 05) and Dave Brat (R-VA 07).

Some of the top numbers for challengers: Ret. Lt. Col. Amy McGrath (D) raised nearly $800,000 in her bid to oust Rep. Andy Barr (R-KY 06). In CA-39, two Royce challengers posted eye-popping hauls, thanks to hefty self-funding. In open-seat races, state Sen. Van Taylor (R) raised $1 million in a little more than a month for his TX-03 bid. In MA-03, former mayoral chief of staff Daniel Koh (D) raised $806,000 and, in OH-16 former NFL player Anthony Gonzalez (R) raised $627,000.

"Christopher Steele, the former British intelligence officer who wrote the explosive dossier alleging ties between Donald Trump and Russia," says in a new book by The Guardian's Luke Harding that "Trump's land and hotel deals with Russians needed to be examined. ... Steele did not go into further detail, Harding said, but seemed to be referring to a 2008 home sale to the Russian oligarch Dmitry Rybolovlev. Richard Dearlove, who headed the UK foreign-intelligence unit MI6 between 1999 and 2004, said in April that Trump borrowed money from Russia for his business during the 2008 financial crisis."
