Americans for Prosperity announced Wednesday it would launch a TV ad that urges Virginians to to “vote against” Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam (D) because Northam, by missing meetings of the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, “let a fake Chinese company … take $1.4 million of our money.”

“The ad will air in markets across Virginia and in Washington, D.C.” (release)

AFP spokesman Levi Russell “said the ad buy ranges from $1 million to $2 million, and will run for two weeks. He said the commercial is the first round of paid television advertising, but declined to say how much the organization plans to spend through Election Day in November.” (Washington Post)

“Northam released two TV ads Tuesday. The first ad counters” former RNC Chair Ed Gillespie’s (R) recent spot on sanctuary cities, stating that “if I’m governor and you commit a violent crime … you’re going to prison.”

“The second targets Gillespie’s tax plan as ‘just another tax cut for the wealthy.’” (National Journal)

The RGA’s state PAC also launched a microsite targeting Northam on immigration, coal, “safety,” and his attendance record at government meetings. (release)

DACA. “In a carefully worded response” to President Trump’s decision to end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, “Gillespie … seemed to sympathize with the Dreamers’ plight while calling for strong enforcement of immigration law.”

Gillespie: “I’m encouraged that Sen. Tom Cotton and others say they are going to find a legislative solution to DACA. I don’t believe that children should be punished for decisions that were not their own, but at the same time, it is important for us to enforce our laws. If an illegal immigrant commits a crime, he should be deported. And we should not allocate scarce tax dollars for in-state tuition to illegal immigrants, and provide them scarce slots at our public colleges and universities over Virginia citizens.” (Richmond Times-Dispatch)

Northam: “His [Trump’s] decision lacks compassion, lacks moral sense, and lacks economic sense. I call on Congress to take action immediately to pass clean legislation to continue the DACA program.” (release)
