Former state Rep. Chris Herrod (R) “was the surprise winner Saturday of the Republican Party’s nomination to replace” Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R), beating out 10 other candidates in five rounds of voting. … Many had seen the real battle as between” state Sens. Deidre Henderson (R) and Margaret Dayton (R), “who have been campaigning hard since Chaffetz announced last month he wasn’t going to serve out his term. But Herrod, whose campaign said he spent less than $5,000 on the race compared to about five times that for Henderson, tapped his longtime experience with the GOP to win over a majority of the more than 1,100 delegates.” Herrod will join Provo Mayor John Curtis (R) and lawyer Tanner Ainge, who won spots on the ballot by gathering signatures, on the Aug. 15 primary. (Deseret News)

“Utah Democrats overwhelmingly picked” physician Kathryn Allen (D) “to be their standard bearer … Allen blew away her rivals, winning 76% of the vote at the Democratic State Convention in Ogden.” (Utah Policy)

MONEY MATTERS. “The only way” the indebted Utah GOP could “afford a special convention Saturday to nominate a replacement for outgoing Rep. Jason Chaffetz is that Chaffetz is donating the money to pay for it. (The five-term congressman had a $400,000 balance in his campaign account as of the end of March.)” (Salt Lake Tribune)
