“As the 2018 Maryland gubernatorial race starts to take shape, there are two Democratic hopefuls with strong social justice records positioning themselves to carry the mantle for progressives.” Former NAACP President Ben Jealous (D) and State Sen. Rich Madaleno (D) “are each hoping to do what then-Del. Heather Mizeur couldn’t in 2014: energize the most liberal wing of the Democratic Party in a way that catapults them to the nomination. Jealous is vying to become the first African American to lead the state, while Madaleno, who has indicated that he plans to run for the seat but has not officially declared, would be Maryland’s first openly gay governor.” (Washington Post)

TIMING. Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz (D), “who is crisscrossing the state in his role as president of the Maryland Association of Counties, says it will likely be after Labor Day before he decides whether to run for governor in 2018.” (Washington Post)

STAYING OUT. Gov. Larry Hogan (R) “offered little reaction to Maryland’s top cop suing the President of the United States. On Monday the Governor released a statement saying, ‘Per the resolution passed by the General Assembly, the Governor’s office no longer has a role in this process.’” (WBFF)
