Lt. Gov. Phil Scott (R) sported an statistically insignificant lead against former state Transportation Secretary Sue Minter (D), 39-38%, in a new Castleton Polling Institute survey (Sept. 29-Oct. 14; 579 LVs; +/-3.9%). Former Red Sox pitcher Bill Lee, for the Liberty Union party, “got 2 percent. … 81 percent of Republicans, and people who lean Republican, say they’ll vote for Scott. Minter, meanwhile, picks up 65 percent of Democrats, or voters who lean Democratic. … The poll found that Minter is winning 4 percent of Republicans’ votes; Scott is getting 14 percent of Democrats’.”

“While the poll shows Scott with an edge over Minter on issues related to the economy, taxes, the budget and cost of living, voters say they trust Minter on education and the environment. ” (VPR)

ON DEFENSE. Minter is running a new TV ad countering RGA attack spots. A narrator in the ad says, “They’re paid for by a national Republican group whose biggest funder is the oil billionaire Koch brothers.” It then says, “Scott voted to raise the gas tax and supported a tax on every mile you drive.” (Seven Days)

Minter also released a new ad on Wednesday promising to “create new livable-wage jobs.” (release)

FACE-TO-FACE. Scott and Minter “squared off in their final head-to-head debate” on Tuesday. “The pair found agreement on a few issues. … But they clashed over debates. … Energy policies, marijuana legalization, and how to balance a budget were also hot topics.” (WCAX)
