Former Gov. Rick Perry (R) is “mulling advice from some partisans who want him to challenge [Sen. Ted] Cruz in the 2018 senatorial primary. … Friends and associates describe [Perry] as restless and anxious to climb back into the national conversation. Some of these sources believe he’d have a shot at a Cabinet position in a Donald Trump administration, possibly as secretary of energy or agriculture.”

One Texas GOP party elder said they didn’t believe Perry could beat Cruz, but that “Cruz is vulnerable.” “His negatives have caught up with him,” the source said. “He made a fool of himself at the convention, and that means he made a fool out of Texas. That’s not a good place to be in our state.”

“Eager to mend fences, Cruz has lowered his public profile, laid on a heavy travel schedule back home and offered to help national Republicans raise money for their candidacies.” (Tom DeFrank, National Journal)
