A new ad from pediatric neurosurgeon Monica Wehby’s (R) campaign features a tearful mother whose daughter was saved by a spinal surgery performed by Wehby. Aside from highlighting Wehby’s impressive biography, the spot subtly points to her conservative pro-life credentials, working to see through a pregnancy that some doctors had suggested be terminated. MERKLEY ABOVE 50. A poll conducted on behalf of Sen. Jeff Merkley’s (D) re-election campaign by Benenson Strategy Group (D) puts the Democrats up 16 points over state Rep. Jason Conger (R) and 20 points over Wehby (R) (April 14-17, 600 LVs, ±4.00%). The survey pushed back on numbers released by Harper Polling (R) in early April that showed Merkley under 50%. It also polled the two challenger against eachother, and found Conger up %24 percent to 22% with 55% undecided (April 14-17, 410 LPVs, ±4.00%). (The Oregonian)

The Portland Tribune has endorsed Wehby in the GOP primary as the party’s “best shot” against a “well-funded Democratic incumbent.” It concedes that the doctor lacks political experience, but is wise on health care and realistic about chances of repealing Obamacare. It also points out her experience working on political issues while serving in leadership roles at the Oregon Medical Association and the American Medical Association. (Portland Tribune)
