Rep. Darrel Issa (R) “on Thursday angrily denounced” state Assemblyman Tim Donnelly’s (R) “attempts to link gubernatorial rival” and former Treasury official Neel Kashkari (R) “to fundamentalist Islamic law” in a post on Facebook. Donnelly claimed Kashkari “condoned the strictures of sharia law because he once participated in a U.S. Treasury conference about Islamic finance.”

“There is no place in any public discussion for this type of hateful and ignorant garbage,” Issa said in a statement. “As far as I’m concerned, this type of stupidity disqualifies Tim Donnelly from being fit to hold any office, anywhere. Donnelly is no longer a viable option for California voters.” He continued: “It is crap like this that gives Republicans a bad name, and there is no place in the Republican Party or in this race for someone like Tim Donnelly.” (Los Angeles Times)

AVOIDING THE TARP TRAP. The Los Angeles Times profiled Kashkari’s (R) time at the U.S. Treasury Department running the Troubled Asset Relief Program. Kashkari “hopes voters will focus on the program’s success in combating the financial crisis, not the policy’s unpopularity.” The profile includes comments from former Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, and notes that in her new book, “A Fighting Chance,” Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D) “who chaired a TARP oversight panel at the time”¦was less complimentary” of Kashkari’s work.
