Rep. Jon Runyan (R) called the Republican primary to replace him “ugly as hell” and criticized former Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan (R) for being “way too abrasive” to win a general election in the moderate district. Lonegan has insisted he is the only true conservative in the race. “That’s what liberals say about conservatives all the time - conservatives who want to end the welfare state,” he said.

Runyan has endorsed former Randolph Mayor Tom MacArthur (R) in the primary. The winner will face Burlington County Freeholder Aimee Belgard (D). (Philadelphia Inquirer)

MacArthur has defended himself against Lonegan’s claim that the race is a “classic battle” between the conservative and liberal wings of the Republicans Party. “I understand why he wants to make it that,” MacArthur said. “You can’t forget that Steve Lonegan tried very hard to get the support of what he now calls the establishment.” (Newark Star-Ledger)
