GSN Receives Journalism Honor

The Wash­ing­ton chapter of the So­ci­ety of Pro­fes­sion­al Journ­al­ists on Tues­day re­cog­nized Glob­al Se­cur­ity News­wire for 2013 on­line in­vest­ig­at­ive journ­al­ism.

A series of art­icles by Seni­or Re­port­er Douglas P. Guarino was named a fi­nal­ist in the group’s an­nu­al Wash­ing­ton Dateline Awards. The art­icles re­vealed that new U.S. En­vir­on­ment­al Pro­tec­tion Agency guidelines for nuc­le­ar-dis­aster re­sponse could weak­en pub­lic health pro­tec­tions, des­pite the agency’s pub­lic state­ments to the con­trary.

SPJ judges said “Guarino’s ex­cel­lent re­port­ing pulled back the cur­tain with which EPA shrouded it­self and freed the facts.” This was the second journ­al­ism hon­or Guarino re­ceived since join­ing GSN in 2012.
