Pres­id­ent Obama is tre­mend­ously un­pop­u­lar in Ap­palachia, thanks in large part to his ad­min­is­tra­tion’s treat­ment of the coal in­dustry. But the in­dustry has long been in de­cline, and it fared even worse un­der some of Obama’s pre­de­cessors.
