Child nutrition programs will expire tonight as the House leaders dropped plans to move a reauthorization bill to the floor before the recess.

House leadership “will push hard for a vote in the lame-duck,” a House Democratic aide said late Wednesday.

The reauthorization bill would add $4.5 billion to the school meals budget over 10 years, but Democratic differences over whether to use a future reduction in food stamp benefits to pay for the increase prevented action, the Democratic aide said.

The Senate has already approved its version of the bill.
