John McCain likely wouldn’t have started the War in Iraq if he had been president, he said at a National Journal and CNN event Thursday night.

The Arizona Republican said he would have scrutinized the evidence more thoroughly—and seen through it. He would have surrounded himself with a team of advisers that would have challenged him, he told media as well as a group of Capitol Hill and K Street professionals at the Washington event.

“You’ll find this surprising,” he said, “but I think I would have been more reluctant to commit American troops.”
