Sen. Jim DeMint (R) is taking an “increasingly assertive role” in contested GOP primaries, but “is steering clear of a contentious primary in his backyard involving his home-state colleague,” Rep. Bob Inglis (R-04), who is facing four GOP challengers “accusing him of being insufficiently conservative.”

Sources say DeMint will not be endorsing Inglis and will likely stay out of the primary entirely, which is “a blow” to Inglis, “who has been a political mentor to DeMint for much of his career.” DeMint’s “withholding his seal of approval” will “make it even tougher for Inglis to win back his old conservative backers” (Kraushaar, Politico, 11/23).
