Multiple reliable GOP sources say Treas. Richard Mourdock (R) is preparing to challenge Sen. Dick Lugar (R) in the GOP primary. Mourdock: “I’ve had a lot of Republicans telling me that I ought to look at a lot of things. It’s very flattering.”
Mourdock “said that he if told his wife” he was kicking off another campaign, “the papers would be served by tomorrow.” and he wants “to take some time, clear his desk off” and then see “what doors open.”
There had been speculation that state Sen. Mike Delph (R) might challenge Lugar, as well as ‘10 candidate Don Bates Jr. (R). Bates said that many GOPers were angered by votes Lugar cast confirming Justices Kagan and Sotomayor. Bates: “People in the party have become a lot more conservative than Sen. Lugar. They don’t want compromise with the president” (“Howey Politics,” 11/10).
