House Speaker Paul Ryan (R) will hold a “Winter PAC Retreat” in mid-February in Boca Raton, FL. “Ryan is targeting K Street donors and business community political action committees for the event.” (Politico)

SCHEDULING NOTE. The presidential primary calendar could help congressional challengers prevail over incumbent candidates, particularly in the southern states that are hosting a March 1 primary.

“The S.E.C. states,” said Republican consultant James Harris, “will have an uptick in their normal turnout because of the presidential primaries.” And candidates like real estate mogul Donald Trump (R) and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) could draw anti-establishment voters to the polls.

That could have a notable effect in AL-02, where Tea Party leader Becky Gerritson (R) is challenging Rep. Martha Roby (R). Two weeks later, a similar scenario could play out in NC-02, where Rep. Renee Ellmers (R) is trying to fend off a primary challenge from Chatham County GOP Chair Jim Duncan (R). (Roll Call)
