Special Session for Redistricting Starts Next Week

Republican lawmakers will have to draw lines that Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe would approve, or a court will draw the map.

The Vir­gin­ia le­gis­lature’s two-week spe­cial ses­sion to re­draw con­gres­sion­al dis­trict lines be­gins next week. State Sen. John Chap­man Petersen (D) said he views the ses­sion as a way of show­ing Re­pub­lic­ans and Demo­crats can reach a com­prom­ise, even though Re­pub­lic­ans are ap­peal­ing the rul­ing that re­quired re­dis­trict­ing and would prefer to keep the lines as they are.
