'We did not expect... We did not know... We don't have any independent knowledge...'

The Obama administration wishes  ignorance was bliss.

President Obama is under fire for claims that he didn't know the NSA was listening to the private phone calls of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and other foreign leaders. But it's hardly the first time the White House has claimed that the president has been kept in the dark.

There's that time just last week that Obama didn't realize HealthCare.gov was a '404 Error' waiting to happen.

Or that time last spring when news broke that the IRS had been targeting tea party groups for extra scrutiny.

And that no matter how many times his administration has parroted a belief in 'unfettered' journalism, the public is less likely to believe it when the Department of Justice was secretly obtaining Associated Press phone records for months.

In the President's case, ignorance has been less bliss, and more blistering.
