Louie Gohmert Is Trying to Woo Sean Hannity to Texas

A low-stakes race for the conservative star's residency is on.

If Sean Hannity really does decide to leave New York over comments by the state's governor, it looks like he'll be welcomed in Texas.

Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas invited the Fox News and radio host to be his guest at next week's State of the Union. Inviting a big-name conservative to President Obama's annual speech isn't a new media strategy: Last year, Rep. Steve Stockman invited Ted Nugent.

But Gohmert's motivation goes beyond just a one-off publicity stunt. "Inviting Sean Hannity, first of all, was part of my ongoing effort to encourage him to become a resident of Texas, where he'd be so much more appreciated," the lawmaker told Breitbart News.

Hannity threatened to leave his home state of New York this week after Gov. Andrew Cuomo said, "Extreme conservatives, who are right-to-life, pro-assault weapon, anti-gay ... have no place in the state of New York." On his Monday radio show, Hannity said he "can't wait to get out of here," suggesting later that he hasn't decided where he'd like to go, but that he's "leaning Florida," with Texas as an alternative.

Gohmert is doing what he can to tilt the balance. The bid for Hannity isn't just about getting a new neighbor. Hannity, who is teasing a political run, could also wind up being a future colleague. As Gohmert told Breitbart:

When you are about to enjoy something as pleasurable as listening to this president give a State of the Union address, you just want to share the experience with a dear friend like Sean. Of course, with all the talk about his running for Congress, Sean might just be able to check out the lay of the land.

Texas has made its bid. Your move, Florida. Someone page Allen West.
