Cathy McMorris Rodgers is about to get her moment in the national spotlight. Congressional Republicans announced Thursday that the fifth-term representative from Washington state would deliver the nationally televised official Republican rebuttal to President Obama's State of the Union speech next week.
McMorris Rodgers certainly has a compelling personal biography. She was the first in her family to graduate from college and now serves as the fourth-ranking Republican, and highest-ranking woman, in the House. She is a mother of three children—all of whom she gave birth to since she was first elected—and is the only woman ever to have more than one child while in Congress. Her eldest son has Down syndrome, and after his birth she founded the Congressional Down Syndrome Caucus.
"Her experience, hard work, and commitment to family provide an example that Americans outside the halls of Congress understand," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said in announcing the pick.
McMorris Rodgers, who is the chairwoman of the House Republican Conference, said in a statement, "I am honored to speak with Americans in every corner of the country on Tuesday and to share our Republican vision for a better future—one that trusts the American people and doesn't limit where you finish because of where you started."
