Mitt Romney: Veto of Arizona's Antigay Bill 'Is Right'

Mitt Romney isn't too big on Twitter. Yes, he has more than 1.5 million followers, but his recent tweets have tended more toward the Zach Braff than the political.

That changed Tuesday afternoon.

SB 1062 is the Arizona legislation that would let state businesses refuse on religious grounds to provide services to gay and lesbian customers. The bill itself, which recently passed the legislature, has no shortage of enemies. Arizona businesses are worried that it could cost the state next year's Super Bowl. Apple CEO Tim Cook urged the state not to let the bill become law. The measure is likely to be vetoed by the politically minded Republican Gov. Jan Brewer.

So Mitt Romney's not alone. But he's an obviously powerful voice. Within 10 minutes, Romney's tweet earned nearly 300 retweets.

This isn't squarely about politics for Romney, who has said repeatedly he's not even considering a 2016 presidential run. But it's yet another sign that national attitudes have shifted so quickly on gay marriage that GOP standard-bearers are making sure to publicly position themselves in a way that won't hurt their party's future.
