Ken Cuccinelli Calls for Chris Christie to Resign RGA Chairmanship

Chris Christie keeps taking lumps -- even from his fellow Republicans. The latest came on Tuesday evening when former Virginia attorney general and failed candidate for governor Ken Cuccinelli called on the New Jersey governor to step down as chairman of the Republican Governors Association.

On the day Christie was sworn into his second term, Cuccinelli argued that the scandal surrounding the Christie's administration alleged closure of a bridge for political retribution could spread beyond New Jersey's borders if he stays put atop the RGA

"I think just from the perspective of setting aside this as an issue in other races it makes sense for him to step aside in that role," Cuccinelli said on CNN's Crossfire. "He does not serve the goals of that organization by staying as chairman."

The call for Christie's resignation is the latest symptom of how fast and how far Christie's political star has plummeted since he led early 2016 polls only weeks ago.

Cuccinelli himself had wanted to become a Republican governor last year but lost to Democrat Terry McAuliffe. The RGA was Cuccinelli's biggest financial backer in that race. Meanwhile, Christie coasted to a landslide reelection last November.

Cuccinelli said his call for Christie to step down didn't validate the charges of political retribution. "It doesn't matter, perception is reality," he said.

He said he didn't know if Christie, who recently traveled to Florida on a fundraising swing for a fellow GOP governor, had considered such a step.

"I have no idea what his thinking is on that," Cuccinelli said.
