Jimmy Carter Is Alive, Carter Center Confirms

Contrary to Donald Trump's recent remarks, the former president is—obviously—not dead.

Donald Trump's one-liners drew quite a few laughs at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Thursday.

One of them, however, was probably not intended to be funny. Talking about President Obama's low approval ratings, Trump mentioned "the late, great Jimmy Carter," a president remembered by conservatives and historians as one of the worst.

Carter is, in fact, not dead. "The president is alive and well," a spokeswoman at the Carter Center, a nonprofit the 89-year-old former president founded in 1982, told National Journal with a laugh by phone. She said Carter remains "active."

And she's right. Just last week, Carter sent letters to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, expressing "grave concern" about the ongoing political crisis in the nation that has resulted in bloody protests in recent weeks.
