Allies of Hillary Clinton aren't going to take the tauntings of a man in a giant squirrel costume lying down, so they've enlisted their own online arboreal rodent to fight back against the Republican National Committee's, which has been stalking Clinton at recent stops on her book tour.
The pro-Clinton squirrel calls itself a "frenemy" of its anti-Clinton counterpart, and seems more disappointed than angry in HRC Squirrel's political views. "It's sad to me, because meeting a fellow sciurus politicus is about as rare as a new idea from the @GOP," the pro-Clinton RNC squirrel tweeted.
It also said it was "JEALOUS" that Clinton gave a copy of her new memoir to the GOP squirrel Tuesday evening, and asked to borrow the book when its opposite number was done reading it.
Adrienne Elrod, the communications director for Correct the Record, the pro-Clinton group which created RNC Squirrel, said it seemed only appropriate to respond in kind. "A silly, squirrelly campaign by the RNC deserves an appropriate response," she said.
Correct the Record, a project of the Democratic super PAC American Bridge, was created to defend Clinton from Republican attacks. "Correct the Record has launched RNC Squirrel to try and communicate with the RNC and discover why Republicans are so short on ideas and real dialogue and have to resort to cartoonish antics," Elrod added.
Raffi Williams, a RNC spokesperson and its official "squirrel translator," dismissed the newcomer. "They made a parody account of [a] parody," he said.
The Squirrel King, from the unlicensed 1990s Sega video game, could not be reached to mediate the dispute.
