According to Mother Jones, two former appointees of Gov. Susana Martinez (R) are "accusing high-ranking officials in her administration of public corruption, mismanagement, and intimidation" in a lawsuit filed in February. "It claims that officials at the state's economic development agency engaged in extramarital affairs that could expose the state to sexual harassment charges and that officials tried to silence employees who reported contracting violations and other wrongdoing." The lawsuit targets Jon Barela, the secretary of the New Mexico Economic Development Department, and his deputy.
The piece is the second in recent weeks by Mother Jones writer Andy Kroll digging into records and recordings from Martinez and her staff. The first piece spawned a series of attack ads from Martinez's Democratic challengers, who are competing in the June 3 primary.
