An additional 400,000 people have enrolled in private insurance coverage through the Obamacare exchanges as of this week, bringing the grand total to 7.5 million.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced the updated number in a Senate Finance Committee hearing on the president's fiscal 2015 budget Thursday. The administration previously announced that 7.1 million people had signed up as of the end of the open-enrollment period on March 31.

It is still unknown how many of these individuals have paid their first month's premiums, but estimates have ranged from 80 to 90 percent.

HHS extended a special enrollment period for those who began their applications but were unable to complete them. The deadline for those individuals is April 15, and individuals can continue to submit their applications until then.

"We expect that number to grow," Sebelius said of the additional enrollees.
