EPA Drafts Scaled-Back Renewable Fuels Goal

The Environmental Protection Agency is proposing to lower its targeted levels for renewable fuels next year, reports E&E (requires a subscription), and is circulating the plan to industry leaders.

The current standard would require more than 18 billion gallons of biofuel production; the new target would be closer to 15 billion gallons, including 13 billion gallons of corn ethanol. Opponents of the mandate say it has caused increased prices for other corn products like livestock feed.

The move would mark the first time the EPA has chosen to reduce the mandate's sequential increases, which are designed to reach 36 billion gallons by 2022.
