Auto club AAA warned Monday that ethanol increases as part of the renewable-fuel standard could spike gas prices and damage engines, The Hill reports.
The mandated yearly increase in ethanol levels, the group said, could result in blends that are harmful to cars and void warranties. "There is a real opportunity to put motorists first in what has been a very contentious disagreement between various industries," said AAA President Bob Darbelnet.
He also voiced his support for a potential decrease in 2014 levels, which the Environmental Protection Agency is reportedly considering. "It is great news to hear that the EPA is considering a RFS proposal that would support this homegrown alternative while acknowledging the inability to achieve an outdated mandate," he said.
