Military officials warned members of the Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday that further sequestration cuts would mean a reduction in the readiness of future troops and a possible increase in casualties, the Army Times reports.

“We are headed toward a force in not too many years that will be hollow back home and not ready to deploy,” Marine Commandant James Amos said. “And if they do deploy, they will enter harm’s way; we’ll end up with more casualties.”

His sentiment was echoed by Army Chief of Staff Ray Odierno, Adm. Jonathan Greenert, the chief of naval operations; and Air Force Chief of Staff Mark Welsh. Each said their respective branch of the military would have to decrease its enrollment numbers. They also expressed concern about not meeting the 2012 Defense Department’s strategic guidance.
