McCain: Iraq War Might Not Have Started if I Were President

Arizona Republican said he would have scrutinized the evidence more if he were in the Oval Office in 2003.

John McCain likely wouldn't have started the War in Iraq if he had been president, he said at a National Journal and CNN event Thursday night.

The Arizona Republican said he would have scrutinized the evidence more thoroughly—and seen through it. He would have surrounded himself with a team of advisers that would have challenged him, he told media as well as a group of Capitol Hill and K Street professionals at the Washington event.

"You'll find this surprising," he said, "but I think I would have been more reluctant to commit American troops."
