No, Edward Snowden Did Not Blow the Lid Off the Alien Conspiracy

A semi-official Iranian news agency says the leaker’s documents “prove” ETs exist and are running the government. The truth may be out there, but it’s not here.

What do Adolph Hitler, Edward Snowden, and extraterrestrials have in common?

Who knows. But FARS is a semi-official news agency of the Iranian government, reportedly affiliated with the Revolutionary Guards, which suggests that someone in Tehran thinks this new report alleging that Washington is secretly run by a malevolent race of extraterrestrials known as “Tall Whites” — who also, by the way, engineered Hitler’s rise to power — will boost their country’s geopolitical posture vis a vis the United States.

The FARS report, which is almost entirely plagiarized word-for-word from a crackpot conspiracy blog that claims to be the “World’s Largest English Language News Services,” brings the astonishing revelation that a Russian security-agency report on documents leaked by Edward Snowden provides “‘incontrovertible proof’ that an “alien/extraterrestrial intelligence agenda” is driving U.S. domestic and international policy, and has been doing so since at least 1945.”

I can’t find any other news reports about this allegedly totally real Russian FSB report on Snowden, and one assumes there would at least be some coverage of arguably the biggest reveal of the century. Snowden says he brought no secret documents to Russia, where he is currently living.

Glenn Greenwald, the journalist who broke the Snowden story and has spent more time poring over his documents than perhaps anyone else on this planet, splashed cold water on the FARS report, responding sarcastically:

@aseitzwald It was the story I was working on next. I was scooped and I’m not happy about it. #AlienHitlerLink

— Glenn Greenwald (@ggreenwald) January 13, 2014

The report leans heavily on a Russian television interview with former Canadian Defense Minister Paul Hellyer, who has made a name for himself in recent years by claiming that there are 80 different species of aliens who walk among us and for warning that George W. Bush was going to “get us into an intergalactic war” with some of those species by building a moon base

FARS has also recently reported that a 27-year-old Iranian man invented a time machine and, on the eve of the 2012 election, that most white rural voters in America would rather vote for then-Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad than Barack Obama. That latter story came from The Onion.

But at least those bogus stories made some sense for a semi-propaganda outfit — they make Iran look good. Why FARS thinks it can help Tehran win the cold war with Washington with such a patently absurd story is beyond us.

One shot in the dark: Iran and international powers just finalized a nuclear deal, which will go into effect later this month. At least this gets people talking about something else.

The truth may be out there, but it’s not here.

TAKING A LONG VIEW TO SOUTHERN STATES
In Dropout Speech, Santorum Endorses Rubio
2 days ago
THE DETAILS

As expected after earlier reports on Wednesday, Rick Santorum ended his presidential bid. But less expected: he threw his support to Marco Rubio. After noting he spoke with Rubio the day before for an hour, he said, “Someone who has a real understanding of the threat of ISIS, real understanding of the threat of fundamentalist Islam, and has experience, one of the things I wanted was someone who has experience in this area, and that’s why we decided to support Marco Rubio.” It doesn’t figure to help Rubio much in New Hampshire, but the Santorum nod could pay dividends down the road in southern states.

Rubio, Trump Question Obama’s Mosque Visit

WHY WE CARE

President Obama’s decision to visit a mosque in Baltimore today was never going to be completely uncontroversial. And Donald Trump and Marco Rubio proved it. “Maybe he feels comfortable there,” Trump told interviewer Greta van Susteren on Fox News. “There are a lot of places he can go, and he chose a mosque.” And in New Hampshire, Rubio said of Obama, “Always pitting people against each other. Always. Look at today – he gave a speech at a mosque. Oh, you know, basically implying that America is discriminating against Muslims.”

THE TIME IS NOW, TED
Cruz Must Max Out on Evangelical Support through Early March
2 days ago
WHY WE CARE

For Ted Cruz, a strong showing in New Hampshire would be nice, but not necessary. That’s because evangelical voters only make up 21% of the Granite State’s population. “But from the February 20 South Carolina primary through March 15, there are nine states (South Carolina, Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi, and North Carolina) with an estimated white-Evangelical percentage of the GOP electorate over 60 percent, and another four (Texas, Kansas, Louisiana, and Missouri) that come in over 50 percent.” But after that, he better be in the catbird’s seat, because only four smaller states remain with evangelical voter majorities.

Rubio Now Winning the ‘Endorsement Primary’

WHY WE CARE

Since his strong third-place finish in Iowa, Marco Rubio has won endorsement by two sitting senators and two congressmen, putting him in the lead for the first time of FiveThirtyEight‘s Endorsement Tracker. “Some politicians had put early support behind Jeb Bush — he had led [their] list since August — but since January the only new endorsement he has received was from former presidential candidate Sen. Lindsey Graham.” Meanwhile, the New York Times reports that fueled by resentment, “members of the Bush and Christie campaigns have communicated about their mutual desire to halt … Rubio’s rise in the polls.”

7 REPUBLICANS ON STAGE
Carly Fiorina Will Not Be Allowed to Debate on Saturday

THE LATEST

ABC News has announced the criteria for Saturday’s Republican debate, and that means Carly Fiorina won’t be a part of it. The network is demanding candidates have “a top-three finish in Iowa, a top-six standing in an average of recent New Hampshire polls or a top-six placement in national polls in order for candidates to qualify.” And there will be no “happy hour” undercard debate this time. “So that means no Fiorina vs. Jim Gilmore showdown earlier in the evening for the most ardent of campaign 2016 junkies.
