Ethics Group Files Complaint Over Michael Grimm's Threats

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington wants an investigation into the New York Republican's conduct.

Rep. Michael Grimm may not be able to dodge his threats to break a reporter in half with just an apology.

On Wednesday, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington filed a request with the Office of Congressional Ethics to begin an investigation to see whether Grimm "violated House rules by physically and verbally threatening a reporter following the State of the Union address" on Tuesday night. Grimm's threat to toss the NY1 reporter over a balcony violates House Rule 23, CREW contends. That rule mandates all House members conduct themselves "at all times in a manner that reflects credibility on the House."

CREW compares Grimm's behavior with that of former Rep. Bob Filner, D-Calif., who was cited in 2007 by the House Ethics Committee for demonstrating "poor judgment" at Dulles Airport.

This isn't Grimm's first run-in with CREW. The group filed two separate complaints about the New York Republican in 2012, and it included him on its most recent (bipartisan) list of the most corrupt members of Congress.

If this investigation actually happens, it wouldn't be the only one Grimm has to worry about. Earlier this month, the FBI arrested a former Grimm fundraiser on charges she illegally brought in more than $100,000 to his campaign. Grimm is also under federal investigation over accusations that he or his campaign illegally asked for money from foreign donors.
