Joint Chief Adm. Greenert Evacuated From Navy Yard During Shooting

Adm. Jonath­an Green­ert, the top U.S. Navy of­ficer and a mem­ber of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was at the Navy Yard dur­ing Monday morn­ing’s shoot­ing and was evac­u­ated safely, De­fense One has learned.

Ac­cord­ing to mul­tiple new re­ports from the Navy Yard, at least four people have been killed and at least 10 wounded by a gun­men be­lieved armed with at least an auto­mat­ic weapon.

Green­ert is chief of nav­al op­er­a­tions, known in the mil­it­ary as the CNO. The Navy Yard in South­east Wash­ing­ton, D.C., houses the CNO’s headquar­ters.

Green­ert “was at Navy Yard at time of in­cid­ent and evac­u­ated safely,” said Cm­dr. Ry­an Perry, Navy spokes­man at the Pentagon. Perry did not provide any cas­u­alty es­tim­ates but said the Navy is track­ing “re­ports of sev­er­al wounded/sev­er­al fatal­it­ies.”
