NationalJournal.com Adds Health Care to Policy Channel Offerings as Part of Site Redesign
Sam Baker to Lead National Journal Health Care

WASHINGTON, D.C., Oct. 29, 2013 — As the Obama Administration continues to address the problems around the implementation of the Affordable Care Act and the Healthcare.gov site, National Journal debuted a new digital channel dedicated to health care policy. National Journal Health Care provides comprehensive, up to the minute coverage and analysis of what’s trending in the health care policy arena. Coverage is led by health care reporter Sam Baker, who recently joined National Journal from The Hill. Correspondents Sophie Novack and Clara Ritger are also contributing to the vertical along with others in the newsroom, given the scope of the issue.

“National Journal Health Care offers high-utility reporting and analysis for National Journal readers, from our members to our subscribers to anyone else needing comprehensive coverage of health care related issues,” said Tim Grieve, National Journal’s Editor-in-Chief. “And Sam Baker is the ideal journalist to lead this effort.”

An established and respected health care policy journalist in Washington, Baker has been covering health care for over 6 years, reporting on the passage and early implementation of the Affordable Care Act at Inside Health Policy and later at The Hill.

A daily email newsletter, Health Care Edge, will complement the digital reporting and will be available at no cost. “With the Health Care Edge, we’ll be able to reach a wider audience that’s both plugged in and curious, but for whom the full suite of products and premiums that we provide for our members isn’t necessary,” added Grieve.

The new Health Care channel follows National Journal Energy, which was introduced October 1 as part of the roll-out of NationalJournal.com’s larger redesign. It features reporting and analysis from Amy Harder, Coral Davenport, Alex Brown, Clare Foran and Patrick Reis. Harder also leads the daily newsletter, Energy Edge, which, like its health care counterpart, is a free, opt-in product and features Harder’s take on what’s trending in energy plus high-utility summaries of the day’s news and events.

The launch of National Journal Health Care and National Journal Energy build on the sustained, dramatic growth happening throughout the publication. NationalJournal.com set an all-time record for website traffic in September, and October’s traffic is expected to be nearly double what it was in the first part of 2013.

WHY WE CARE

A DHS report "found gaping holes in domestic nuclear detection and defense capabilities and massive failures during covert testing." A team put in place to assess our readiness capabilities found significant issues in detecting dangerous radioactive and nuclear materials, failing to do so in 30 percent of covert tests conducted over the course of the year. In far too many cases, the person operating the detection device had no idea how to use it. And when the operator did get a hit, he or she relayed sensitive information over unsecured open radio channels."
