HMP Drops $11.3M on California Ads

EMILY's List released ads in NC-02 and TX-07.

House Majority PAC is dumping $11.3 million into six battleground races in California. The ads target Reps. Jeff Denham (R-10), Steve Knight (R-25), Mimi Walters (R-45), and Dana Rohrabacher (R-48), and former state Assemblyman Young Kim (R) in the open CA-39, and Board of Equalization member Diane Harkey (R) in the open CA-49. The ads message on preexisting conditions, Social Security, and link some candidates to President Trump.

The California investment is part of a $20 million ad blitz the PAC is launching in 13 districts. HMP will spend:

  • $2.2 million in the Miami media market to run two ads in both English and Spanish hitting Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R) in FL-26 for his involvement in creating the Republican tax overhaul
  • $885,000 to run two TV ads aganist Rep. Mike Bishop (R) in MI-08
  • $554,000 in the open MI-11 linking businesswoman Lena Epstein (R) to Trump
  • $1 million in the New York City market to run an ad against Rep. Leonard Lance (R) in NJ-07
  • $1 million against former Rep. Cresent Hardy (R) in NV-04
  • $741,000 on cable in New York City and broadcast in Albany to hit Rep. John Faso (R) in NY-19
  • $2.3 million in the Dallas market to cast Rep. Pete Sessions (R) in TX-32 as a career politician

The Congressional Leadership Fund is out with new ads in WI-01, NC-02 and CA-10. One spot hits ironworker Randy Bryce (D) for his delinquency on child support payments. A second knocks former lieutenant governor nominee Linda Coleman (D) for missing the due date to pay taxes over 60 times. And another links investor Josh Harder (D) in Gov. Jerry Brown (D). Meanwhile, EMILY’s List is going on the air in Texas and North Carolina. One spot knocks Rep. John Culberson (R-TX 07) for taking $175,000 from insurance companies that raise premiums on his constituents. A second ad, backed by a $400,000 buy, also knocks Rep. George Holding (R-NC 02) for taking money from big pharma and touts Linda Coleman’s childhood “working the Carolina tobacco fields” and her work as a teacher. (release)

The League of Conservation Voters will spend $266,000 to run a TV ad hitting Rep. Ted Budd (R-NC 13) for voting “to let big corporations spew more toxic pollution into our air and water.” The spot will run in the Charlotte and Greensboro markets. The group will also spent $778,000 running an ad against Diane Harkey in CA-49. (release) And the House Freedom Fund, the political arm of the Freedom Caucus, reported spending $305,000 on ad buy against former CIA operative Abigail Spanberger (D), who is running against Rep. Dave Brat (R-VA 07). (FEC)

THE COMMITTEES. The DCCC canceled ad spending in VA-10 for Oct. 29 to Nov. 6, a sign of confidence in its prospects against Rep. Barbara Comstock (R). (Medium Buying) But the committee is going on the air in AR-02, and dropped its first ad, which casts Rep. French Hill (R) as beholden to special interests, voting for a health care bill that cut coverage for preexisting conditions and a tax bill that gave breaks to millionaires. The buy is worth $250,000. (Politico) And the DCCC also launched a six-figure ad buy in the Albany and NYC markets against Faso. (release)

The NRCC released 15 ads attacking Democratic challengers: former housing bubble whistleblower Katie Porter in CA-45, former Army Ranger Jason Crow in CO-06, registered nurse Lauren Underwood in IL-14, 2014 governor nominee Paul Davis in KS-02, state Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi in NY-22, assistant state House Majority Leader Jared Golden in ME-02, former Defense Department official Elissa Slotkin in MI-08, 2016 nominee Angie Craig in MN-02, gelato tycoon Dean Phillips in MN-03, water attorney Xochitl Torres Small in NM-02, philanthropist Scott Wallace in PA-01, former Air Force intelligence officer Gina Ortiz Jones in TX-23, retired Naval Commander Elaine Luria in VA-02, state Sen. Jennifer Wexton in VA-10, and pediatrician Kim Schrier in WA-08. The ads message on a variety of issues, including knocking Democrats for their support of “a government takeover of health care” and linking them to Nancy Pelosi. In KS-02, the ad references an incident where Davis was caught during a police raid at a strip club. (release)

AZ-02: Former Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick (D-01) touts her efforts to reduce backlogs at VA hospitals and call for an investigation into scandals at the VA in her newest ad. (release)

CO-06: Rep. Mike Coffman (R) is out with two new ads. One touts his efforts to stop the deportation of a four-year-old adopted child. (Twitter) A second accuses Democrats trying to link Coffman to Trump. “Coffman has been against the president on major pieces of legislation. He voted against the repeal under president trump because of concerns about people with preexisting conditions.” (Advertising Analytics)

Meanwhile, Jason Crow’s (D) new ad features footage of him and other repeating a creed he pledge while serving in the military. (Twitter)

GA-07: The first ad from former state Senate Budget Director Carolyn Bourdeaux (D) hits Rep. Rob Woodall (R) for voting for the Republican health care bill while accepting a government plan provided to members of Congress. (release)

IL-12: St. Clair County State’s Attorney Brendan Kelly’s (D) new TV ad features a rape victim touting Kelly’s efforts to help those who survived sexual assault. (release)

MI-07: Rep. Tim Walberg (R) emphasizes his bipartisan record in his latest TV ad, even noting a 2016 bill he cosponsored that was signed into law by Presdent Obama. Walberg previously criticized the former president for not answering questions about his birth certificate and once mentioned impeachment. (Detroit Free Press)

MI-11: Former auto industry rescue worker Haley Stevens (D) vowed in her newest ad she will “fight for Michigan’s fair share of federal road money” to improve the state’s roads. (Twitter)

MN-02: Angie Craig’s (D) new TV ad features Minnesotans being silenced as they speak out on issues important to them, claiming that special-interest money in politics drowns out the voices of voters. (release)

NM-02: State Rep. Yvette Herrell (R) repurposes footage of Torres Small (D) hunting in her latest ad to paint her opponent as a Nancy Pelosi supporter who is “taking aim” at personal freedom and jobs. (CBS News)

OH-12: Franklin County Recorder Danny O’Connor (D) accuses Rep. Troy Balderson (R) of working for corporations in a TV ad, claiming the Republican supported a tax cut for businesses that the average American will have to pay for. The spot is running in the Columbus, Zanesville, and Mansfield markets. (release)

TX-07: Trial attorney Lizzie Pannill Fletcher (D) proposes allowing Medicare to negotiate for lower drug prices in a TV ad, a position that President Trump held during his 2016 campaign. Fletcher emphasized her desire to work with both parties on health care, all while calling Culberson (R) indebted to pharmaceutical companies contributing to his campaign. (release)

TX-23: Gina Ortiz Jones (D) speaks directly to camera and claims Rep. Will Hurd (R) is afraid to talk about his record in a new TV ad, while emphasizing her own roots in the community and service to the country. (YouTube)
