Trump Stumps for Heller

He noted they haven't always gotten along.

Sept. 21, 2018, 11:26 a.m.

President Trump “on Thursday offered full-throated support for” Sen. Dean Heller (R) “while unleashing a torrent of grievances against Democrats and the news media and claiming they are sabotaging his administration. … The president noted that he and Heller — who once said he ‘vehemently’ opposed Trump — did not always get along.”

Trump: “We started out, we weren’t friends. I didn’t like him, he didn’t like me! … But as we fought and fought and fought, believe it or not we started to respect each other, than we started to like each other, then we started to love each other. Ever since I won the election, he’s been there for us.”

Heller: “Mr. President, I think you just turned Nevada red today.”

“Trump, appearing at a boisterous rally in Las Vegas, defended his embattled Supreme Court justice nominee, touted the booming stock market, cited progress in talks with North Korea and pledged to build his long-promised border wall.” (AP)

Trump of Rep. Jacky Rosen (D): “A vote for Wacky Jacky … is a vote for the extreme agenda [of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.] She’s going to do whatever Pelosi and Schumer tell her to do.” (Las Vegas Review-Journal)

Heller on his description of delays in Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation as a “hiccup:” "No, I do not believe sexual assault allegations of any kind are a hiccup, I was referring to how poorly the Democrats have handled this process and the fact that the Democrats have not worked with the Judiciary Committee Chairman in good faith.” (USA Today)

BIG PICTURE. “Nevada is often referred to as a purple state and occasionally as a light blue one. That’s because of recent history – three consecutive Democratic presidential candidates have won here. … But those are presidential campaign years, when turnout is above 80 percent and Hispanic turnout is higher and crushes Republicans. … This is a midterm, where turnout is much lower. In 2014, the last midterm, it was 46 percent. Compare that to 2016’s turnout: 77 percent. … So despite his upside-down numbers and the Trump drag, Heller could still win because of the likely Democratic dropoff. Indeed, strategists might say the Democrats are – because of this history – fortunate to be so close here and in the governor’s race.” (Nevada Independent)
