Stivers Claims Ignorance of Hagedorn's Controversial Remarks, Slurs

He is running in a district that backed Trump by 15 points.

Sept. 12, 2018, 10:24 a.m.

NRCC Chairman Steve Stivers "said he was entirely unaware, until asked by reporters last week, that one of his top recruits"—2016 nominee Jim Hagedorn (R)—"celebrated the death of a political opponent, made sexist remarks about others, and offered a host of other offensive comments in his stint as a political blogger. ... Hagedorn infamously dubbed Washington’s two U.S. senators, both women, 'undeserving bimbos in tennis shoes.' He wrote that Harriet Miers’ nomination to the Supreme Court was an effort 'to fill the bra of Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.' He dubbed a former House Republican’s alleged abuse victim, 'white trash'; called Indian reservations 'casino parlors' and 'redistribution of wealth centers'; and suggested that former Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) bucked his party on the Iraq War due to his Jewish faith."

The Republican also celebrated the 2002 death of former Rep. Patsy Mink (D-HI 02) and "predicted that Barack Obama's victory would usher in mass migration from his 'second country' of Kenya," but Hagedorn's campaign noted that he apologized for many of his previous comments during his 2014 run for Congress. "But this cycle, in the age of Donald Trump, he’s taken a more combative tone. 'If someone wants to run a political correctness and identity politics campaign against us,' he told Roll Call last month, 'we’ll see what happens.'"

Despite Hagedorn's inclusion in the NRCC's Young Guns fundraising program, Stivers appeared unaware of the comments during a Christian Science Monitor breakfast last week; a spokeswoman for the NRCC later called the remarks "inappropriate." Hagedorn faces former Defense Department official Dan Feehan (D) in his bid to fill Rep. Tim Walz's (D) open seat, which backed President Trump by 15 points. (Daily Beast)

THE DETAILS

"U.S. Rep. Bradley Byrne became the first official Republican entrant into the 2020 U.S. Senate race announcing his intention to run in a race that could become one of the most expensive political contests in Alabama history. Byrne, a three-term congressman from Fairhope, said he anticipates the fundraising during the lengthy 2020 campaign to eclipse the 2017 special Senate election, in which an estimated $50 million was spent during the contest. Democratic U.S. Senator Doug Jones, who narrowly defeated Republican Roy Moore in that election, raised more than $24 million."
